SNVC 16U and 18U Teams Take on the Snownami Challenge

This past weekend, Superior North Volleyball Club’s 16U and 18U Girls Competitive teams traveled to Duluth, Minnesota, to compete in the highly anticipated Minnesota North Snownami Tournament. Facing strong competition from across the region, each team showcased skill, determination, and teamwork, making SNVC proud.

16U Girls Competitive Team

The 16U team came out strong, winning all three of their morning games and securing the top spot in their bracket. Their stellar performance advanced them to the Gold Division for playoffs, a significant accomplishment that demonstrated their growth and hard work. Their success reflected the dedication and preparation they’ve put in throughout the season, with coaches Julia Curtis, Emma LaFreniere, and Lily Lingner guiding them every step of the way. In the semifinals, the team battled fiercely, winning the first set but ultimately falling short in the second and third. Despite the outcome, the tournament showcased their improvement and resilience. Off the court, the team enjoyed bonding over dinner at Olive Garden, strengthening their camaraderie for future competitions.

Coach Julia Curtis reflected on the team’s progress, stating, “This weekend was a huge breakthrough for the girls. It really showed how hard they’ve been working together to improve both on and off the court. Finishing third in the Gold Division is a major accomplishment, and with provincials right around the corner, we know they’re only going to keep building on this success.”

Outside hitter Madelyn Brassard also shared her thoughts on the tournament, saying, “The weekend was a great success for our team. We relied on each other and showed true teamwork, making it all the way to the semifinals in the Gold Division and fighting hard through three sets. From the first game to the last, we improved individually and as a team. These tournaments bring us closer, whether it’s braiding each other’s hair at night, catching rides together, or going shopping. This was one of my favorite tournaments.”

Libero Leia Desjardine added, “One of my favorite moments of the tournament was just being with my teammates and having fun. We served really well, stayed loud, and had great energy. It was especially fun when people on my team got clipped (a fun tournament tradition where players from other teams write positive messages on clothespins and attach them to opponents’ belongings or clothing).”

18U Girls Competitive Team

The 18U girls embraced the high level of competition, appreciating the opportunity to play against teams outside their usual circuit. Their ability to adapt and compete at this level was a testament to the training and leadership provided by coaches Sarah Gordon, Hannah Gingera, and Payton Leflar. Team captain and outside hitter Gianna Dysievick shared, “This tournament gave us a great chance not just on the court but also off the court to bond and create amazing memories as players.” The event was particularly significant for the team, marking their first tournament together. They quickly found their rhythm, learning to play as a unit while facing top-tier opponents. The experience provided valuable lessons and contributed to their overall growth, setting them up for continued success in the season ahead.

Coach Payton Leflar reflected on the weekend, saying, “I think the team did excellent this past weekend. It was our first tournament, so there were definitely some ups and downs. As the tournament went on, the girls got better together, and we won our first game in a close three-set match! I was really proud of their defensive performance and our blocking lineups, which led to double-digit blocks throughout the weekend. Off the court, we had a great team dinner on Saturday, and I look forward to our next tournament in Winnipeg, where we’ll have even more opportunities for team bonding.”

Libero Dani Burbeck shared her perspective, stating, “Our team played incredibly and gave it everything we had. One of the biggest highlights of this tournament was getting to compete together for the first time this season. Playing at the UMD gym made the experience even more special—it was truly an unforgettable first tournament.”

A Weekend of Growth and Competition

More than just the competition, Snownami was a valuable experience for both teams, reinforcing the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and passion for the sport. Competing at this level provided valuable lessons and strengthened the bonds within each team. The dedication from athletes, coaches, and supporters was evident throughout the weekend, making the tournament an unforgettable experience.

SNVC is incredibly proud of all the players and coaches who represented the club with such heart and commitment. With plenty of season left ahead, both teams are looking forward to continuing their development and reaching new heights in the game.
