Superior North Volleyball Club’s 16U High Performance team hit the court in Oakville on December 6 for the OVA Challenge Cup, returning home with more than just match results. They came back a stronger, tighter, and more confident team.
Captain Leila Kallio reflected on the experience, sharing how the weekend pushed the team in all the right ways. “Competing last weekend in Oakville was an experience that pushed us physically and mentally, but this brought us so much closer together,” she said. From hotel hangouts to Uber rides to team dinners, Leila emphasized how every moment contributed to the team’s bond. “By the end of the tournament, win or lose, we walked away proud of how we played as a unit. Oakville gave us not only great competition but also an opportunity to grow together.”
Fellow captain Avaleen Moore echoed this, highlighting both their performance and their connection. “You could really see how much we’ve grown as a team,” she said. “Our communication, trust, and support were strong, which helped us stay calm even in tougher matches.” Off the court, the team found just as much value in shared laughs, travel time, and weekend long encouragement. “Being together the whole weekend made us feel more like a family, and that connection showed in the way we played.”
Head Coach Morgan Davis was equally proud of how the group battled through every moment. “The girls played hard and never gave up even when things got challenging,” she said. She also continued the team tradition of the “Hustle the Mussel” Player of the Game Jellycat award, with Devina Amisheva, Mya Letowski, Ania Nesti, and Ava Peterson earning recognition throughout the weekend.
The Giants opened strong, winning both morning matches and finishing first in their pool. They faced a tough quarter final loss but regrouped and continued to compete with determination, ultimately finishing seventh overall. The result reflects both their progress and their potential as the season continues.
The 16U HP team returns home proud, motivated, and more united than ever. The weekend proved that success is about more than perfect passes or powerful hits. It is built on resilience, connection, and the belief that every athlete contributes to something bigger than themselves.
